“Ħelwa studios in Berlin is home to Maltese/American composer, producer and sound engineer Jim Hickey. Located in what was once the largest chocolate factory in the world, Ħelwa means candy, sweet or beautiful in Jim’s semi native Maltese. The studio was recently built from the ground up as a writing and production suite while offering everything required for multitrack recording in the warm, wood lined live room next door. As an electronic artist, Hickey relies on Ħelwa’s wall of synths, a collection of vintage and modern, analog and digital. Vintage guitars, amps and an upright piano are part of the family too. A small collection of modern classics and handmade gear resides in the racks which, along with an extensive mic collection make capturing performances an intuitive part of the process. Hickey’s experience as a performer ranges from opening for acts like Elton John and Nena as a young session guitarist to touring with bands he’s produced in Germany and under his own name in the electronic scene. As a songwriter and producer he’s worked for fashion labels, written theme songs for TV and recently released tracks with prominent Techno and House producers as a vocalist. This is the experience is at the heart of Ħelwa studios, now home to Rupert Neve’s spectacular 5088.”
