A Loaded 500 Series Rack at FOH with Incubus

John Kerns (FOH Engineer for Incubus) sent us a nice email the other day and was kind enough to give us permission to share it. Thanks John!

Just finished up a several year (off and on) run with Incubus and I thought you may like to see a pic of my FOH rack. Minimal but mighty!

So, I used to use a couple of fairly industry standard "soft-clip/comp” devices on my guitar subgroups…but eventually they weren’t doing what I needed…

The first 2 542’s are across my “clean” guitar subgroup. This contains the clean electrics, acoustics, and Pipa. There is a fair amount of saturation on these, but with the blend feature it sort of ends up being a 75% wet, 25% dry parallel thing.

The next chain is for the “dirty” guitar group, and has a 542 into a 535 on each side. Not as much saturation as on the clean, but no dry signal…these then go into a 535 which is where the weight is added. That big diode bridge bottom really comes out, and these are at about a 50-50 blend of wet and dry.

The next lot are a 543 comp into a 545 PSE. (In rack wrong order, just never got around to moving them ha) these are on Nicole's vocal and Brandon's vocal group. Probably the cleanest and most transparent compressor I’ve ever used, and I don't think that there is a tour out there anymore without some 545’s.
