Kore Studios and the 5088
Can you please tell us a bit about the studio? Where it is, when it opened, etc?
The studios are based in a 2000 sq ft warehouse in Acton, West London. The building is laid out over two floors, with the main control room and live room on the ground floor and hospitality + a mastering studio on the first floor. The live room is 42 square meters with a 4 meter ceiling height. Additionally, there are two iso booths for separation off the main room. There is a long corridor leading down to the live room that is great for micing up when the doors are left open.
The studio was opened in 2004 by Engineer and Owner George Apsion. He was trained at two iconic London studios, firstly Westside in Holland Park and then the famous Townhouse Studios on Goldhawk Road.
Who was involved in the studio’s design & build, and its configuration & equipment installation?
Studio Design was handled by White Mark Ltd. All gear specified by George.
Is there any particular style of music that you specialize in, or any particular part of the music production process?
We work with a lot of live acoustic music, usually contemporary bands. Often it’s for the loud bits, so drums, bass and guitars…anything that requires a well tuned and isolated acoustic space.
How did you first hear about Rupert Neve Designs, and the 5088? What made it the right choice for the studio?
I had used a lot of Rupert Neve gear and was always impressed by the sound. The Shelford Channels were always a popular choice amongst clients and I always felt like they were a much more muscular and useful sound than the channels in our API 1608. This led me to demo a 5088 and I was immediately sold.
How does the 5088 compare to previous consoles you may have had at the studio? What differences do you notice?
The 5088 seems to get you a finished result a lot quicker than previous consoles I’ve owned. The detail and focus is unreal. The headroom is amazing and the Silk control is a fantastic part of the circuit.
What is your 5088’s configuration?
32 Channels, with 12x 5053 + 8x 5051 + 16x 5052.
On Silk: are you Team Red or Team Blue? Why?
Red – love what it does to the high end.
What does the name ‘Rupert Neve’ mean to you?
Equipment that is beautifully designed to make the engineer’s life as pleasurable as possible.
